How to measure and present a painting quote

Most of the price of painting depends on three things: the area, the condition of the walls and the finish. A clear quote keeps them apart.

  1. Measure the area. For walls, add up the perimeter of each room and multiply by the height; take off large doors and windows. Ceilings are length times width. Put the square metres in the quantity of each item.
  2. Separate preparation from painting. Sanding, filling and priming take time and often decide the result. Give them their own line.
  3. State the number of coats and the type of finish (matt, silk, gloss). “Two coats of washable emulsion” makes clear what is being bought.
  4. Say who supplies the paint. If you do, note the brand or range and the estimated litres; if the client buys it, write that down.
  5. Count what is not wall separately: doors, windows, radiators, skirting. These are usually charged each or per metre.

How to use this template

The quantities and prices per square metre are examples. Replace them with your measurements and rates, and add what you need: doors, windows, removing textured coatings, treating damp.
