What a good plumbing quote includes
- The job, in words the client understands. “Replace the basin mixer tap in the main bathroom” says more than “sundry works” and avoids arguments later.
- Labour and parts shown separately when the parts are a big part of the price (taps, boilers, cisterns). The client can see what they pay you for and what they pay for the part.
- The call-out charge or minimum fee as its own line, if you make one. It is better written down before you go.
- The address of the job and, where needed, access: keys, a doorman, whether the water has to be turned off for the whole building.
- What is not included. Opening up and making good walls, tiling, removing rubble or working out of hours are usually extras: say so.
- The date and how long the price holds. Parts prices change; 14 or 30 days protects both sides.
Quote or estimate?
In everyday UK use a quote is a fixed price and an estimate is a best guess that can change. Say which one you are giving. If it is an estimate, say what could move the price (hidden leaks, parts that turn out to be obsolete).
What to put in the terms
- A sentence about hidden faults: if opening up reveals another leak or a pipe in poor condition, you tell the client before carrying on and quote for it separately.
- Your hourly rate for the unexpected, so the client knows what to expect.
- The guarantee: what it covers (for example your labour and the parts you fitted, not wear on other parts) and for how long. Check the minimum consumer rights that apply where you work.
- The payment method and when: on completion, or part on acceptance if you are buying expensive parts.
Common mistakes
- Giving one total with no breakdown: if the client asks for a discount you have nothing to negotiate with.
- Not writing down whether the job involves hot water, gas or only cold water. Work on gas must be done by a suitably registered engineer (in the UK, Gas Safe registered): check the rules where you work.
- Forgetting the small parts (washers, tape, flexible hoses). There is a sundry materials line for that.
